Byens centrum er en gammel maurisk bydel med en labyrint af små gader, og spændende indkøbsmuligheder på internationalt niveau. Byen kan siges at være "hovedstaden" i dette område, bestående af selve Almunecar, La Herradura og Punta de la Mona.
Klimatisk er området det eneste i Europa med et næsten tropisk og meget mildt klima, omgivet af Middelhavet og bjergene, med Sierra Nevada i Horisonten.
