Torrox ligger i 145 meters højde over havet, 40 km. fra Málaga og 15 km. fra Nerja. Man kører seks, syv km. ad kystvejen mod øst fra Torre del Mar og svinger til venstre mod Torrox.
Byen ligger i læ af de store bjerge, Sierra Tejeda og Sierra Almijara. Den gennemløbes af floderne río Torrox, Huit og Manzano. Området er frugtbart med mange landhuse.
Torrox er oprindelig en gammel romersk bosættese, Clavicum, som stammer fra mellem I og IV årh. e.K. Ved fyrtårnet, El Faro, i Torrox Costa har man udgravet rester af badeanstalter, en kirkegård, ovne og rester af boliger, samt saltkar og saltbeholdere, som man brugte til produktion. Disse fjerne skygger fra romertiden blander sig med det strålende lys fra Islam, som det kommer til udtryk i gadestrukturen og det hellige, hvide kalk på husene i "El Callao" (Benævnelsen af bykærnen i Torrox).
