Alhaurin el Grande is one of the biggest and most vibrant towns in the area, with a privileged location on the skirts of the mountain ‘Sierra de Mijas', overlooking the Guadalhorce valley. The village is close to the city of Malaga and just a short drive from the coastal areas of La Cala de Mijas and Fuengirola. The Arabs named it ‘Jardin de Ala', translated as ‘Ala's Garden'. Later, the Catholic Kings added ‘El Grande' (the big one) to distinguish it from its sister town Alhaurin de la Torre. Currently its economy is focused on trade and agriculture, which was the main economic engine of the region 1000 years ago when oil, wheat and figs were already produced and delivered to Malaga city and port. Its inhabitants are known as alhaurinos but there is also a large presence of foreigners settled in the town. Besides the historic buildings, fincas and townhouses, there are also many modern apartments and a large golf complex located in Alahurin el Grande. There is a big variety of restaurants, bars and shops were locals mix with other nationalities. The main plaza is always busy and vibrant. Besides that, it offers a superb view of the valley. The village offers the best of both worlds: coast and inland! The village of Alhaurin el Grande is located just 25 minutes (22 km.) from the city of Malaga and the airport. The beaches of the Costa del Sol (Fuengirola/Mijas) are only a 15 minute (18 km.) drive away. Alhaurin el Grande is a municipality in Malaga province situated to the north of the Mijas mountain range. You will find numerous cultivations of citruses, fruit trees and vegetable farms. The name of Alhaurin came from the Arabs, and after the conquest of the catholic kings, these would add “el Grande” to differentiate it from the other Alhaurin in Malaga, "Alhaurin de la Torre". Several cultures have passed through this place: Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs have settled in Alhaurin throughout history, although the human presence goes beyond, with Neolithic archaeological remains. The Greek presence provided methods to cultivate the lands of the city and prune vineyards, something that achieved an increase of the local population and the trade. The romans created different settlements inside Alhaurin el Grande, amongst them we can highlight ‘Fuente del Sol’ and ‘la Huerta del Niño’ (where they found a tombstone of a young roman); in these settlements, numerous archaeological remains have been found although the most important of all is the aqueduct on the Coin road. Amongst the benefits that the Arabs brought to Alhaurin el Grande, we can highlight an increase of trade, agriculture and cattle farming in the area. They created several buildings in the city, like the mosque for example, that we could see if it weren’t for the Christian temple built after the conquest. We’ll also find, amongst the most important remains, the well-known Castillo de la Reina (the queen’s castle), today almost completely disappeared, that was used by the Queen Isabel after the conquest. Alhaurin el Grande was an important location during the Al-Andalus period, and was also the culture that named it "Alhaur", which means "the valley people". From Malaga you can reach the city in 30-40 minutes by car (28 km).
